The College
Queen Elizabeth I founded Jesus College in 1571, with encouragement from a Welsh clergyman and lawyer named Hugh Aprice. It is the only Elizabethan college in Oxford, and is located in the city’s historic centre on Turl Street. Jesus College’s original site was developed over four centuries, the earliest being its First Quad, which today still includes a beautiful Jacobean Dining Hall, 17th century Chapel and Principal’s Lodgings. The historic Fellows’ Library holds College’s collection of early printed books, and our beautiful quadrangles provide an oasis of green in the heart of Oxford.
The most important development for the College in the later 20th century was the admission of women as students in 1974. Jesus is proud to be one of the first five historic colleges in Oxford to become co-ed. As an ever-forward thinking institution, Jesus College upholds the highest standards of academic excellence within a vibrant, diverse and inclusive educational community. ❖
